Synchronization and stochasticity in circadian oscillators ensembles

By Hernandez-Garcia, E.; Komin, N.; Murza, A.; Toral, R.
Short talk given by E. Hernandez-Garcia at the BioSim workshop on Methodological Challenges for Systems Biology: linking networks, crossing scales (Venice, Italy, 30 March -3 Abril 2009) 2009

A version of the model of neuronal circadian oscillators in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, developed by Gonze et al. (Biophys. J. (2005) 89:120-129)) is studied with emphasis in the effects of intercellular diversity on response and synchronization. Increasing variability in the timescales of the interconnected neurons has the main effect of progressively damping spontaneous oscillations until completely arresting them. Simultaneously, the synchronizability of the network to external circadian stimuli, as measured by a response function, becomes improved around an optimal amount of disorder.
