Prof. Maxi San Miguel, UIB Full Professor of Condensed Matter Physics and director of IFISC (CSIC-UIB) has been awarded with the Medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics, given together with the BBVA Foundation, as a recognition to his scientific trajectory and research activity.
Born in Barcelona (1952), Maxi San Miguel graduated in Physics at the University of Barcelona (1974) and is Doctor in Theoretical Physics by the same University (1978). Nowadays, he is the Director of IFISC since its foundation in 2007 and UIB Full Professor since August 1986 (Full Professor of Theoretical Physics until 1990 and of Condensed Matter Physics since 1990). Currently his investigation is focused on Physics of Complex Systems from the statistical and no non-linear physics perspective and has leaded big part of the progresses in this area for the last decades.
He has more than 300 publications in scientific journals and one of his works has more than 2.200 quotes. He has been an invited speaker for more than 90 international congresses and has given seminars and talks in ten research centers around the world. He has directed a big amount of national and european projects, and he is member of the editorial board of many prestigious specialized journals.
In adition, he has been coordinator of Physics and Mathematics of the National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP) (1990-93); Deputy Director of the Instituto Mediterráneo de Estudios Avanzados (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB) (1995-1999); Director of the Department of Cross-disciplinary Physics of IMEDEA (2000-07) and President of the Statistical and Non-linear Physics Division of the European Physical Society (2002-04).
